Engineers have been around all throughout history. However, in the past century, the profession has been regulated, ensuring that there is a stringent process that prospective Professional Engineers must take to become license holders. This is the case for numerous jurisdictions around the world. Fundamentally, a Professional Engineer takes legal responsibility for their work.
We have trusted Professional Engineering license holders to keep our systems and our society safe for 200 years. Whether its signing off on a bridge design or on a safety system in a nuclear reactor. We need Professional Engineers more than ever today to keep our digital systems safe as well. They can take accountability in our AI systems and play a crucial role in how AI systems are designed and deployed in the age of AI.
Professional Engineers are held to a Code of Ethics that binds us as follows:
(Reference: PEO Code of Ethics)
We are bound by law to uphold these codes of ethics. In addition to the code of ethics, the entire profession of engineering requires a high duty of care and professionalism in our work. These are the same ethics and level of trust and professionalism that are needed and critical for building trustworthy AI systems and upholding human rights laws such as ICCPR.
Professional Engineers are qualified technical professionals, bound by duty, bound by ethics, bound by law to ensure public safety and keep the public interest as part of their decision making. As professional engineers we will ensure that AI systems are designed and built to uphold human rights, human values, human safety in a competent and professional and honourable manner.
The world needs to leverage the Professional Engineering license as a mechanism to govern, certify, validate and safely deploy AI systems into this world. It is the perfect construct that has proven to work and will continue to work in the Age of AI.
